John Rutter

The Mass of the Children received its premiere in Carnegie Hall in 2003 and is scored for adult mixed choir, children's choir and orchestra.  The composition is an abbreviated Latin mass with several interpolated English texts, which together form a loose progression from waking to sleeping.  The idea of combining a children's choir with adults is not new, but most works tend to treat the children's voices as subsidiary.  With his Mass of the Children, however, Rutter has given the children's choir a central role to play.  Rutter's skillful writing and his sensitive interweaving of the various Latin and English texts has resulted in one of his finest and most moving works. The Young Voices of Colorado, Jena Dickey, founder and artistic director, is a premiere children's choral organization for treble singers from 2nd through 12th grades.  The mission of Young Voices is to achieve excellence in children's choral music through education. The Colorado Chamber Orchestra (CCO), Thomas A. Blomster, founder and music director, is the transformation of chamber groups serving metro Denver since the 1990's, including the Denver Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of the West and the Mercury Ensemble.  The CCO was formed around a nucleus of the state's finest professional musicians.

Duruflé Requiem with guest organist Joseph Galema of the United States Air Force Academy Friday, March 16, 2012 at 7:30 PM at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church - 10150 East Belleview Avenue, Greenwood Village, CO Show me a map The Requiem by Maurice Duruflé is based on the meditative plainchant melodies of the early church.  Duruflé’s compositional style is ethereal and transcendent, with polyphonic sections that are reminiscent of the most beautiful Renaissance motets.  A master organist, Duruflé's compositional style allows the instrument to be subtle and powerful - almost in the same breath.  Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of the great choral masterworks of the twentieth century. Joseph Galema is Music Director and Academy Organist at the United States Air Force Academy, a position he has held since September 1982.  At the Academy, he is music director for the Cadet Chorale and The Academy Singers, in addition to playing the organ for hundreds of annual services and tours held in the famous Cadet Chapel.  Galema also joined the Lamont School of Music of the University of Denver in September 2008 as Organ Instructor.  As a featured organ soloist, Galema has toured throughout the United States, England, France, Scandinavia and the Baltic States.
